Welcome to the forum. I put the question to the man and this was his response.

Its the procedure where before a case can be committed to Crown Court for trial the defence is entitled to examine all the prosecution evidence and witnesses (in the magistrates court hence its a summary examination) to establish whether there is actually a case to answer (Prima Facie). Its known as "old style committal" and until recent times was regularly used to decide if there was any case to answer, I have previously used it successfully on about 6 or 7 occasions. :yes:
